Wide Screen Camcorders

Do High Definintion camcorders (HV20) receive more picture in the shot than normal non-hd camcorders?

I have a normal Hitachi $140 camcorder, and when I look into the screen, it looks as if it’s not getting much of the picture. It looks like it’s zoomed in, even though it isn’t zoomed in and I’m pretty far back from the subject. I was wondering if these High Defininition camcorder’s get more of the picture in the shot?…a wider angle..?

YES! HD cameras always see more image data than SD cameras.

Camcorders are a combination of two major components: the camera (lens and image sensor) and the media recorder (VCR). Regardless of what format the media recorder is saving, the camera part always sees the world in 16:9 HD. In other words, the lens and image chip always see the world the same way no matter what quality or aspect ratio you save to the recording media.

If your SD camera can create a 16:9 aspect ratio, this is also misleading. The wider aspect ratio is achieved by cutting away the full 4:3 picture into a smaller video picture that is shaped 16:9. A few cameras do this by adding black bars to the top and bottom of the 4:3 frame. Regardless of the technique, the picture may look the same in shape, but much less image data is being seen by the audience – even less than at the full 4:3 setting.
