What type of Network Cabling do I need?
What type of Network Cabling do I need for frequently transfering large graphical files between digital still cameras, workstations and severs. & Also i need to Transfer large video files from digital camcorders to workstations and servers. So which type of NetWork Cabling do i need? RG-8? RG-62? RG-58? STP? UTP? Fiber-optic?
The cable depends on the type of interface you are using. Most likely, you will transfer via Ethernet. Whether Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet, Cat 6 UTP is your best choice. Use a “crossover” cable for a direct PC to PC connection or use straight through cable through a Gigabit Ethernet Switch. There are good but inexpensive (<$150) options available. This applies to the servers and workstations.
For the digital camera, the fastest transfer is typically USB 2.0 which provides approximately 12 Mbps. Both the camera and the computer must support this. Firewire (i.1394) operates at about 400 kbps (much slower).
