trade in camcorders
Will I really notice the difference from actual video 340K pixels to 690k in Sony hc-46 over hc-36?

Same two camcorders. I give up 20x zoom to 12x for more pixels. How to compare trade off?

The pixel different you are talking about here ONLY applies to “still images”. The standard video pixel for NTSC DV camcorder is always 720X480 no matter how large the CCD is. Of course, a larger CCD should have better video quality compare to a smaller one (in most cases). If optical zoom is somewhat important to you and you don’t use your camcorder to take still photos, go for the hc-36 and save yourself $100 for accessory. I personally don’t think this little size differences (1/5.5″ vs 1/6″) of the CCD will make a big different in video quality. At least not to an average consumer’s eyes.
