Im looking to buy a new camcorder. The one i’ve got now plays tapes but I dont want them anymore. I want an up-to date one. But im not sure which is the best to get. I was looking at the DVD camcorders. I thought it’d be great… Record straight onto DVD and then play back with no hassle. But looking deeper into it I dont know if HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and flash would be a better option. Obviously, I am looking for a top quality camcorder, but with the best quality and sharpness, with the most crisp picture I can. I also want to be able to record and play back easily. So which would be the best option?
Tape doesn’t automatically mean a camcorder is not “up-to-date.”
In standard-definition video, believe it or not, even though they use tapes, MiniDV camcorders offer the best options. The compression is least severe when compared to HDD and DVD, they’re most compatible with editing software, and the quality is better than the others.
Think of it this way; you will not see any HDD or DVD camcorders outside of the low end. However, MiniDV has many entries in higher-level camcorders, such as the Panasonic AG-HVX200 retailing for about $5,000USD (it also uses Panasonic’s P2 cards for high-definition video), or the AG-DVX100 (original, A, and B) for about $2,500 (MiniDV is the only format used by this series).
If you want high-definition video, there is the HDV format, which is a compressed high-definition format, but it’s still high-definition. These camcorders use…get ready for this one…MiniDV tape! That’s right, the newest technology, high-definition video, is actually being recorded onto tapes! At higher levels, camcorders are using things like P2 memory for true high-definition video, but tape is still being used as the exclusive media type in camcorders near and over the $4,000 range. I have worked on nationally-shown television shows that recorded segments in HDV (using, for example, the Canon XH-A1).
Whatever you do, stay away from DVD camcorders. The compatibility issues just aren’t worth it. DVD camcorders should be packaged with apologies from the manufacturers, seriously.
