Three Ccd Camcorders
CCD in camcorders? What are they?
I want to buy a new camcorder and the John Lewis buyers guide said that if you want to have a quality image you need to have three CCD.

First off not many cameras have CCDs in them any more they now use CMOS sensors as they are cheaper to make and produce a better picture quality.
1. Basically a CCD or CMOS is the sensor on the camera which records the image that comes through the lens. They say 3 CCDs are better because the red, green and blue light is spilt on to each sensor meaning theoretically more colour in the image. But, as consumer camcorders are so small fitting three CCDs will mean that the sensors are smaller allowing in less light meaning that the image looks worse in dark conditions than a camcorder with a single CCD.
2. The best camcorder depends on which format you want. If you want HDV on Mini DV tapes, as they are easy to edit and store then go for the Canon HV30. If you want a Harddrive camcorder then go for the Sony SR11. Both these cameras are very good and are in the £600 price range. If you go for the SR11 get Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 as this software can edit the video files the best.
I own the Sony SR11 and like it alot. Because of the Harddrive I can record for 600 minutes. Also the picture quality is very good and colourful and works well in the dark. It also has a mic input and a viewfinder things which you dont often see on consumer cameras anymore. The HV30 has these features as well and theres lots of people who like these cameras alot. It all depends if you want a HDD or Tape based camera.
