Sony Hdr Sr12 Camcorders
Pros and cons of getting either a Canon Rebel Xsi with Telephoto Lens or Sony HDR-SR12 Camcorder?
Now that camcorders are getting alot better with storage and Still resolution(~10MB), I can’t decide on whether to get a HD camcorder like the Sony HDR-SR12 and replace my old Hi8, or purchase a DSLR like the Canon Rebel Xsi / 40d with a nice Telephoto lens. Id be capturing mostly kids sports activities like Baseball/Football etc. so a Zoom is a must. I also like having the Direct View feature on a DSLR. Just spoiled with the point-and-shoots. Assume that the costs would probably be somewhat similar.
Well the XSi only has Live Preview not video recording so that should automatically make the choice easier. Or maybe not. On one hand, you have a spectacular camera capable of great pictures, and on the other hand, you have a more versatile HD camera, capable of moving and still images, but doesn’t even come close to what a DSLR can deliver in terms of plain overall quality. If you haven’t looked at them already, I would suggest giving Canon’s new Vixia line of digital video cameras a shot (especially HV30 and HF100) as I would recommend these over Sony’s HD models.
So let’s say you got a video camera. You would have the full game (or at least part of it) with sound and you would be able to see all the plays being played out. Also, you could take still pictures, albeit at a lower resolution than with a dedicated still camera. Additionally you could edit the footage together for a highlight reel. But footage could very easily end up being amateur watch-it-one-time-and-forget-about-it footage, and if you plan to use the pictures instead, they won’t look as great as having a separate still camera. And of course in the opposite scenario, you would either have great photos, or you would have nothing.
Personally, I would go for the XSi, but the more logical choice would be to get a video camera. Although you will be taping instead of taking pictures most of the time anyways, it’s good to have that versatility, and especially if you have a digital still camera already, have someone else take the pictures and you’ll have video and stills for the same moment in time.
Hope this helps!
