Sony Hand Camcorders
Sony camcorder with firewire connectivity? ?
I am looking into buying a camcorder. Right now, I am looking at the Sony DCR- VX2100 Digital Handycam, the Sony professional hand held HDV camcorder and the Canon XH A1S and XH A1.
When looking at the specification of these camcorders, I can’t find anything about if they are compatible with Firewires, since i will use a MAC with them.
Also, can anyone tell me the difference between the Canon XH A1S and the XH A1. Thank you guys so much.
Mike is right – they all have firewire – that is ALL miniDV tape camcorders have firewire, including thoase from Sony, Panasonic, Canon, JVC, Samsung and any other company that makes miniDV tape based camcorders.
They just call it different things. Typically, the firewire port on the camcorder is called the DV port. It is a Firewire400, 4-pin, port. In the context of camcorders, DV, firewire, IEEE1394 and i.LINK are all the same thing and can be used interchangably.
In the case of your Macintosh computer, there may be either a 6-pin firewire400 port or a 9-pin firewire800 port. It depends on the computer. You need to know this when you get the firewire cable. Since we know the camcorder’s DV port is always 4-pin, then it is the computer’s firewire port that will dictate what firewire connector the other side of the firewire cable has. (Some traditional Windows computers use a 4-pin i.LINK/1394 port, but Macintosh computers with a built-in firewire port do not.)
And… just for clarification, in computerese, “MAC” is “Media Access Control” – a computer networking acronym when in all caps. A “Mac” is the nickname many people call the personal computers made by Apple, Inc…
