Well, you are missing crucial info. “sony” – brand is totally unimportant. But the TYPE of camera is important.
So I cannot give you specific advice, gotta use general terms:
But the bottom line is – NO, you cannot save video from camera onto the memory stick. You might be able to record directly onto memory stick (only SOME cameras have those feature, some other use memory card ONLY for still pictures), but in significantly lower quality than would be regular recording on that camera.
Just think about it – as I said, I have no clue what camera is your one but –
if it is miniDV – one tape is 12 GB
If it is DVD recording – one disc is 4.5 GB
and if it is HDD – disc is usually 60GB +

and memory stick is 1 or 2GB? Now, how many memory sticks would you have to carry to transfer like 2 miniDV tapes (=two hours – reasonable vacation video…) or 2 DVDs?

But if lower quality is acceptable (try and see is BEFORE the trip), just record directly onto the memory stick (not transfering already recorded video)

Now…. why would you ever need to do it anyway? Just pack an extra few of your original media.. (miniDV tapes, DVD RW discs) and use those. And if you run out, buy more in Europe. The MEDIA is the same.. recording format is different (PAL versus NTSC)
If you have HDD com, than bad luck, if you plan to record more than is capacity of your disc (should be written somewhere in your cam manual how long movie fits there), you gotta pack your laptop.

As for the “stranger” computer – it is not a problem with software – windows movie maker SHOULD be able to do it and it is part of every windows (without so many features like other special programs, but doable anyway). The only thing is the opposite – hardware… not every comp has firewire card for example (if your cam is miniDV). but again, the same questin – why would you do it on vacation. Just save several recorded tapes and/or DVD and do the final editing and burning at home AFTER THE VACATION.

Hope it helped, have fun.
