Is now a bad time to purchase the Canon XHA1s?

I have been looking into purchasing a professional camcorder, and, because there are such many recent advancements in tapeless professional camcorders I wonder if now is a bad time to buy the XHA1s. Also the XHA1s (I believe) was released over a year ago. Should that stop me from purchasing it as well? I looked at Sony’s Ax2000, which is in my price range, but I learned does not shoot in native progressive. Also I wasn’t crazy about the quality of the test videos I saw of the AX2000. So should I stick with the XHA1s? Or do you guys have any other suggestions for solid state camcorders around $3000? Thanks!

I understand your concern with staying power, but i would temper your enthusiasm for “cutting edge” technology. Compare this to when digital cameras first came out. They took an email quality picture, did not have sufficient computing power to save with compression, so saved in proprietary raw formats that required special software to decode, and since USB was not available, required downloading with a serial port connection. Professional photographers considered them a toy. Now flash forward 15 years. The digital camera takes high resolution photos, jpeg standard, and USB convenience, they are standard for both professionals and consumers.

I would tell you that flashcard consumer HD video is still in the “toy” stage. Proprietary encoding that can only be decoded by special programs. 8 frame GOF architecture (video equivalent of the email photo). And on media that cannot be edited from directly, you still have to download to the computer harddrive. You don’t save anything in work flow over HDV and give up a lot of resolution. If you look at $20,000 professional camcorders, you can see that the industry is moving to memory card based product, but for $2000 – $8000 class cameras, HDV is clearly the winner.
