Sony Camcorders Prices
I wanted to know the price of professional video cameras such as sony..the ones that are used for weddings etc
The cameras that professional companies use to video tape weddings and then edit etc. Do the camcorders usually cost $50,000? or is that too high? please give me any info you might have thankyou
The market for high end yet consumer available camcorders has increased remarkably in the last year or so. As such the cost of a decent camera to film a wedding is significantly smaller.
Generally speaking the $50,000 cameras are broadcast quality. While you could use this for weddings its a bit overkill as DVD quality is actually lower.
Favorite cameras for weddings include Cannons XL2 (which costs around $4-5,000) and Pansonics DVX100B (a little cheaper).
Oddly enough the thing with wedding videos is not so much the technical capability, but more the look of the camera. An ‘over-the-shoulder’ camera makes a client feel at ease that they haven’t wasted their money. While much cheaper cameras are up to the same quality, you’re more likely to get hired if you use a bigger camera (crazy I know).
The other thing to consider is High Def recording. While this gives better image quality, its a little wasted at present as there are no cheap (ie under $900) high def (Blueray or HD-DVD) disc burners meaning that you’ll have difficulty delivering your footage.
Cameras for this have been coming out fairly rapidly now such as Canons sucessor to the XL2 – the XL-H1 (around $10,000 rrp), their cheaper XH-A1 (around $6,000) and Sonys DCR-FX1 (around $4,500) (note US prices are approx as I am English 
)
If you’re considering going into the wedding filming business I recommend you invest a significant amount in sound recording equipment as this is often a neglected area and sound can make or break a good video.
