Sony Camcorders Jvc Camcorders

December 8th, 2007

What do you think of these camcorders? Sony HDR-XR150, Canon VIXIA HF M31, Canon VIXIA HF R11, & JVC GZ-HD620?

I need a good one of course.
The Sony said it has a very high fps for slow motion, (and I love that!). do the other cameras have high fps? maybe they don’t say it?
The Everio. They say i does great in night scenes. there’s a plus!
I don’t know about the canons, they both have less memory.
The sony has 120 GB
The JVC Everio has 120 GB
The Canon M31 has 32GB
The Canon R11 32GB

Ok lets break this down:

Both the Sony and JVC have Low Lux processors that makes them better in low light but are hard drive which means they will boot slower then either of the Canons. Also because they have a hard drive in them they are more likely to get shock damage if the camera if hit or dropped. Back to the Sony the “High FPS” mode you speek of is called Golf Shoot and doesn’t give you much in the way of a large angle on your subject. Again with the Sony if using the Auto setting the camera tends to over saturate colors a bit and greens tend to be a bit dull depending on the lighting. The JVC on the other hand does not have this issue but the controls are a bit fusty and the menus can be difficult to navigate. Though the JVC has great image quality both in low and ambiant light. As for the Canons I wouldn’t even consider the R11 just because if gives you next to no expandability were as the M31 does. Now the advantage of the Canon is there memory because it is Flash Memory you are not going to have to run the risk of the camera’s memory being damaged due to shock and the camera will boot faster which means you get to start shooting faster. As far as downsides to the Canon M31 it does not have a low luw processor so shooting in low light with it will be difficult and obviously doesn’t have the memory capacity that the Sony and the JVC have. Yet the Canon is probably the nicest and most versatile of the 3, do note I’m basically taking the R11 out of the equation, because unlike the others it offers a mini-hotshoe and a Mic input as well as being able to record at 24fps.

Now that we have broke down the different cameras down. Its really a matter of what you are going to use it for. If you want to make more professional looking and sounding movies or v-logs for the web I would highly recommend the Canon because of its versatility. If on the other hand your looking at capturing memories of family and friends I would go recommend the Sony just a bit higher then the JVC because it will auto detect faces and focus on them automatically as well as being able to film in low light. The only reason I wouldn’t recommend the JVC its just the sometimes taxing menu system but other then that it is an excellent camera system.

This is more of a recommendation if you are planing do to ANY editing with any of these camcorders there are a few things you will want to get if you don’t have them already. Obviously if you are running on Windows you will want to get some sort of Video editing software because what comes in the box is extremely limited and Windows Movie Maker is NOT viable for ANY good video editing. On the other had if you are doing this on a Mac iMovie will handle it perfectly but make sure you have OS X 10.5 or above and iMovie ’09 or above to make sure your camera will be detected. Also I would recommend getting either a FireWire, USB 3.0, or eSATA external hard drive so you can store your movies externally and still be able to access them quickly and easily. Now this is just for the Sony camcorder, if you do decide to get it, I alway recommend to get the WD Passport AV 320GiB Hard Drive. This USB 2.0 drive works with the Sony’s direct to disk feature so if you are away from a computer and need to off load your video in a pinch you can do it with this drive without the need for a computer; It also works with just about all Blu-ray players so you can plug it in to a Blu-ray player and view those movies in HD with out so much as burning a disk.

I hope all this information helps you in your decision if you have any other questions feel free to drop me an email.
