Sony Camcorders Home
I don’t know much about camcorders but I need to buy one. Can anyone help my out? My price range is $400-$500.
I’m a fan of Sony. I’ve owned a couple of Sony’s before. I’ve heard of many different ones such as mini dvd and hard drive but I’m having trouble picking one. I just need it for home use- nothing special. If anyone is knowledgable about camcorders please leave an answer. Would really appreiciate it.
Go with a MiniDV model for the reasons mentioned above – hard drives are new and expensive (also, what happens when you fill up the drive? You have to start picking things to delete!). DVD is a highly compressed format, they are indeed a pain to edit, and compatibility problems are very common. MiniDV tape is cheap (as little as $2.59 apiece right now at bhphotovideo.com, even less in bulk).
I’m a fan of the Panasonic PV-GS series (proud PV-GS65 owner). I haven’t looked too deeply, but I’m sure there are other MiniDV camcorders for that price that offer some good features and good imaging (the PV-GS65 offers 3-CCD imaging, which produces incredibly good colors).
If you’re looking at that price, expect well-developed features, crisp images, great color or good low-light performance (you probably won’t get both), and some manual options (white balance, shutter adjustment, iris adjustment, maybe even manual focus) to make the image the way you want it. When you start shooting more, these options will come in handy.
