DVD camcorder or MiniDV?

Finally decided to retire my (still very good) Hi-8 for a newer digital model..I prefer a Sony and am currently looking at DVD Camcorders or the MiniDV.

I would appreciate everyone’s suggestions, comparisons and recommendation. Thanks!

MiniDV has a better recording format than DVD, which is considered to be an output format that was never meant for recording. On a DVD camcorder there is a vast amount of memory built in, so that the DVD is burned in chunks as you go. A recordable DVD (DVD-R) is highly susceptible to degradation as the DVD-R medium is not a long term format. MiniDV isn’t a long term format either as it is a magnetic tape medium, but it will outlast DVD-R.

Ultimately, MiniDV has a better recording format (it looks better), allows you to edit the footage into something watchable (do you really sit and watch the entire tape of what you’ve shot? You’re forced to do that with a DVD Camcorder). And, it lasts longer when archived.
