Sony 1080p Camcorders
Camcorders: Why are some advertised as 1080p and others just 1080?
First of all, I know the difference between 1080i and 1080p, but my question is, does it matter from a recording perspective?
I’m looking into a new camcorder and want to know why some manufacturers (like Sony for example) advertise their camcorders as recording in 1920 x 1080. And others like Panasonic specifically say 1080p recording. Both say “Full HD” on the box.
So does 1080p only refer to how it’s presented? Or is the Sony actually just recording in 1080i? I would think that Sony would specifically use 1080p as an advertising bonus if their cameras really did record in this manner, or if 1080p mattered at all from the recording perspective.
With the large group of frames GOF architecture used in file based HD cameras, the idea of obtaining the advantage of interlaced fields is a moot point. Tape based miniDV and HDV have a data rate sufficient to use interlace to maximum advantage. HDV uses MPEG2 encoding which supports variable GOF and miniDV records every field without temporal compression. AVCHD uses a fixed GOF of 8 so interpolating 7 missing frames on playback makes more sense than interpolating 14 missing fields. Beyond that, most consumer HD cameras now use Megapixel CCDs. It is much easier to interpolate these arrays down to a single 2 mp frame instead of dividing pixels up into 2 x 1 mp fields.
the best quality is either 30i or 60p which is what is used for network television HDTV. the concept of 30p started out because of gaming machines don’t have the horsepower to compute interlaced cartoon graphics in real time. so for the people that first saw HD from using an Xbox or PS3 the idea that progressive scan was better evolved simply because interlaced was not an option. That coupled with the arcane notion that motion picture film is the ultimate quality and that is essentially 24p, low frame rate progressive scan is the current hot topic.
