Small Hand Camcorders
How much do decent camcorders cost?
Not like the big ones the small ones, hand held one.
Pocket camcorders: up to about $250. Small lenses and imaging chip = poor low light behavior. Very compressed video. No audio gain control so poor loud audio recording behavior. Examples: Flip, Xacti.
Entry level consumer camcorders: up to about $500. Lenses grow a little from the pocket cams, but still small. Better low-light behavior, but still not great. Still no audio control, might have an external mic jack. Zoom range is better than the pocket cam. Typically standard definition only. Examples: Canon FS100; ZR960.
Mid to high end consumer camcorders. Up to about $1,300. Lenses and imaging chips grow larger than the Entry level consumer camcorders. Low-light behavior getting better, some with audio control; might have a mic jack; typically some sort of high definition video method. DV/HDV is preferred over AVCHD/MTS. Examples: Canon HV40, HF S100; Sony HDR-CX500 series.
Then the jump to prosumer and pro grade… which would fit your definition of “big one”.
Avoid DVD based camcorders.
Avoid hard disc drive based camcorders.
MiniDV tape is preferred, but flash memory is acceptable.
