You’re probably used to buying cameras based on their “zoom” (e.g. 3x zoom). The problem is, this is pretty much a useless measurement. Zoom is simply the longest focal length a lens can do compared to the shortest focal length a lens can do. The 18-55mm lens is roughly a 3x zoom (55/18 = ~3). The issue is, a 100-300mm lens is also a 3x zoom, but what you see through that lens is vastly different than what you see through the 18-55mm lens. So why is that measurement so common? Well, point and shoot cameras all roughly have their shortest focal lengths at 18mm. Thus an 18-72mm point-and-shoot (4x zoom) really does get 2x closer than an 18-72mm point-and-shoot (2x). You’re comparing apples to apples.
So I’ve mentioned this “focal length” thing a lot. What is it? Basically, it’s a measurement of one of the physical dimensions of a lens. Because it has a physical representation, focal length means the same thing for every lens. Thus, it’s always an apples to apples comparison. So how do you use focal length? Well, on a camera like the D3000 a shot taken at approximately 50mm will see the exact same scene as the eye sees. Shorter focal lengths will see more, but everything will be smaller. A 25mm lens will see twice as much as the eye, but everything will be twice as small. These lenses are commonly used by landscape or architectural photographers because it’s often impossible to back up far enough to get the whole scene into a shot. A 100mm lens, on the other hand, will see half as much as the human eye, but everything will be twice as big. Because of this, you’ll find that most sports and wildlife photographers will use lenses with focal lengths measured in the hundreds (because they can only get so close to the action). Photographers who do portrait shots will usually use lenses around the 50mm (or slightly higher) range. Why? Because a lens that is different than the human eye has to distort the image to fit it into the same field-of-view our eyes see. Therefore, using a 20mm lens on a person would visibly distort them, and that’s certainly not desirable with portrait photography.
So how does this all apply to the 18-55mm lens? Well, what it means is that when zoomed out, the lens is wide angle. Zoomed in, it sees approximately what the human eye sees (this focal length is often referred to as “normal”). The 3x simply means that when you zoom in objects will be three times larger than when you’re zoomed out, but you’ll only see one third of the scene.
