Select Camcorders

HD Camcorder experts help me choose?
So I wish to know which of these Canon HD camcorders produce the best quality and is overall the best
1. Vixia HF 11
2. Vixia HF 100
3. Vixia HG 20
and which Sony is the best
1. HDR-SR11
2. HDR-XR200V
3. HDR-CX12
and which is the best of the two best selected?
From a video quality perspective they are all the same. The save high definition video to very highly compressed AVCHD (MTS) video data files.
From an audio perspective, they are all about the same – I do not believe any of them has manual audio control – but they all have a 1/8″ stereo mic jack. There may be an advantage with the Sonys – they have a menu selection that allows one lvel of audio control – when “Normal audio” then the MicRefLevel is set to “Normal. When the audio is REALLY loud, you can set the MicRefLevel to “Low”. This will help to prevent the audio from sounding muddy and clipped.
From a video capturing environment perspective, I would drop the HG20, HDR-SR11 and HDR-XR200. ALL hard disc drive camcorders have known issues with high levels of vibration (from loud music, whether amplified or not, loud crouds, loud engines, etc.). The hard drive head will park and not allow recording. ALL hard disc drive based camcorders cannot record at high altitude (over 9,800 feet). You may not be planning to get that high – I don’t, but I cannot see into the future, so I just eliminate the potential issue. While these are “hybrid” – you can also record to memory cards, why bother? If you are going to record to highly compressed AVCHD, just go with flash memory… (HF11, HF100, CX12) .
What are you planning to edit with and on? How are you planning to archive the video? How are you planning to view the finished video project? On a HDTV?
With a hard drive camcorder, how are you planning to get the data files off when the camcorder breaks? With Flash memory, just take the memory card out and use another camcorder.
Neither flash memory nor miniDV tape suffers from the vibration and altitude issues hard disc drive camcorders have.
Why aren’t you looking at miniDV tape? HDV continues to be the superior format the pros use (Sony HVR series, Canon XH and XLH series, JVC GY series). This is because it is cheap, is a good archive, is a lot less compression than AVCHD (and everyone knows that video compression = discarded data = reduced video quality)… Or can’t your computer handle a firewire port? Plus, with archiving, the original tape – when you do not re-use the tape – is the archive. And if you want to watch the finished high definition video on a HDTV, just export the project back to the camcorder and connect the camcorder with component or HDMI cables and use the camcorder as the playback deck… Sony HDR-HC9, Canon HV30/HV40… And these cams have manual audio control, too. But, if video quality is not that important, then the next best is flash memory.
