Live stream on camcorders HDMI?
I am doing a presentation for my school. As of now, I’m looking to purchase a new video camera to do live video streaming to my computer. As I understand, you are able to stream with firewire. However, the new cameras only comes with HDMI and USB are you able to stream using HDMI? If not, do you have any recommendations where I can go to find a store that sells firewire connection on the camera to do live streaming to my computer.

Which computer?

Which camcorder?

Most camcorders with an HDMI port use that connection to send video from the camcorder to a monitor – like a HDTV – with an HDMI connector.

Most computers’ with an HDMI port use that to send video from the camcorder to a monitor – like a HDTV – with an HDMI connector… This is not a typor – the computer’s HDMI port usually (not always) is an out-bound only port – not inbound.

Some third party high end video cards do allow HDMI video in – usually for importing video. SInce you did not tell us what computer (or video capture card you are using) we have no way to know if your computer’s HDMI port can accept inbound video data.

At least for now – given the information you have provided, I will say that your camcorder cannot send a video data stream to your computer using an HDMI cable between the two capable of being viewed on your computer as real-time video. I presume this is what you refer to when you say “streaming”.

The easiest alternative will be to use the camcorder’s analog AV port and cable connected to an analog/digital converter and the A/D converter connected to your computer using firewire. The Canopus ADVC55 and ADVC110 can do this. But we don’t know if your computer has a firewire port – if not, you’ll need to install one and we don’t know if your computer has an availbale expansion port to add a firewire port. USB-to-firewire/DV cable/adapter/converter things won’t work.
