Typically, Nikon is known for their professional quality cameras. Canon is good, however I am a Nikon fan myself.
I’m also looking at a new Nikon, the D40 though. I thought about D40x but it runs about $100 more and D40 takes just as nice of pictures in my opinion.

So I would go the extra $6 on the D40x.
