Canon Vixia camcorders?

Is there any rhyme or reason behind the letters/numbers that are used to identify the canon vixia camcorders? I see HF and S and R’s, and there are probably other. I am looking for a new camcorder, HD with flash memory, some internal would be nice, but not necessary. I looked at cnet and canons get good ratings overall and I tend to be brand specific, canon for my point and shoots, nikon for slr, and possible canon for camcorders, if I can decipher the meanings of their names/identifiers. Thank you for any help.

For Canon’s Vixia series, the letters roughly represent the type of media used. I know for sure that the V is HDV/MiniDV tape, as I have the HV30. You’ll see that trend among the other Vixia cameras – some with internal hard drives, some with card slots, etc.

As for the flash memory/internal drive, be aware of the formats you’re working with and what will be involved in converting/editing your chosen format, as well as what kind of computing power will be required. These AVCHD format files are highly compressed and require some intense computing to decompress them for playback and editing. In addition, for file-based cameras, think about how you will archive your video long-term. With tape cameras, the tape IS the archive and you just pop in a new tape to keep recording, but with file-based cameras, there is that extra archival step, which becomes more urgent as you run out of drive/card space, as that must be done to record anything new without having to delete your recordings. If you have any further questions, ask away!

That said, the Vixia line has some good stuff, I’ve been very happy with the HV30 as my backup/home camera. I still get to use the high-quality DV and HDV tape formats, and the camera has a wide selection of manual controls and customizations to let me decide how I want my shots to look.
