Prosumer Camcorders Consumer
Why Hasn’t an HD Codec Appeared for Consumers?
HD video found in DSLRs, broadcast cameras, and some prosumer cameras is excellent and crisp, but while consumer HD camcorders have the same frame size, they can’t deal with motion or lower lighting nearly as well as Mini-DV.
As Mini-DV becomes phased out from the consumer market since it isn’t “HD” (not something I agree should happen, by the way), why hasn’t a consumer codec with HD frame size appeared that has a better compression rate and format?
Obviously it wouldn’t be as cheap as current consumer AVCHD, but I think there’s still a great market for something with an HD frame and professional compression that doesn’t start at $15,000.
I’d love to hear any insight into this!
Thanks
If you gave the general public cameras that created video as well as “professional/broadcast” cameras then what would be the point in me paying thousands for a good quality camera they would loose the business.
you cannot compare broadcast cameras in the same bracket as DSLR’s they are not as good, $ for $ sure they have filmed some TV shows using a DSLR but its far from your camera you can get directly from the store. don’t forget the size of the imaging sensor.
Its a good marketing ploy, let people have what they want, most people dont go into the basics of cameras they know that they charge them put a card in their camera and record, but not many understand about codecs nor do they really want to, and when buying a camera they listen to the sales people, who know little about cameras, only what they have been taught on a half day course.
When the first Tape based cameras reached the consumer market, in their day they were good, but again not as good as broadcast cameras. The world has been smothered with “professional” what does it mean, basically nothing, I use a camera for my job (ok well a few) so you could call every camera I use a professional one, even down to the little sony mini-dv camera I use, people think that because they spend 1K on a camera it has to be “professional”
We all know that processing Highly compressed video is a pain, requires loads of computing power, but again this is not mentioned when buying a camera, so if people had higher quality cameras what are they going to edit the video on, not your standard computer out of PC world.
I think there has to be a balance, between quality, and price, go and buy a Red One for $25,000 then add for all the extras, nice camera (still trying to get my bank manager to loan me the money) there is no point in recording at that quality/resolution, there is nothing consumer that will play it back, at that resolution. So you would have to drop it back to say 2K.
At the end of the day there is nothing for nothing prices are dropping, P2 card were so costly they were only accessible for Tv companies and large studios, today yes they are expensive but more reachable. quality comes at a price if you want it you have to pay for it.
sorry about the epic
