Pro Camcorders 3-ccd
Pro photographer knows nothing about video. Help?
hi all, i am a pro photographer and know almost everything there is to cameras and photography. I want to start in the video recording field and was wondering where I can get info on camera specs and whats important in video cameras. like sensor size and ISO levels and why some cameras have 3 ccd’s and so on. any ways, I would appreciate it if you would help me and provide some links. and also, is there a site like KENROCKWELL.COM or DPREVIEW.COM for camcorders?
What is your budget?

Camcorder is only one part of the system. There’s audio (mics, internal vs external, wired or wireless, stereo, mono, shotgun, boundary, condenser, field mixers and field recorders – and more), lights, power, frame rate requirements and many of the issues still cameras have… like large lenses and imaging chips and low-light behavior, shutter speed interactions with light, ISO, neutral density filters, zoom, low-light graininess, compression and image quality… This is just at the capture stage.
Then there’s editing platform (computer hardware and software)…
My opinion:
Prosumer cams:
1/4″ 3CCD or 3CMOS imaging chips. 1/3″ is preferred.
Lens filter diameter is 70mm or larger.
Low compression video storage.
granular manual audio control.
Pro-grade:
All of the above; add XLR audio-in connectors. If you stay with a prosumer grade camcorder, an XLR adapter (see BeachTek and juicedLink, among others) can do the job.
When you get to camcorders with the above, all the other stuff (iris/aperture control, zebra, neutral density filters, separate zoom and focus rings, and a bunch of other manual controls on the outside of the camcorder and not buried in a menu) just follows.
Low compression video (preferred):
DV/HDV, DVCPro/DVCProHD, HDCAM, XDCAM.
High compression video (not recommended):
AVCHD.
Camcorder suggestions to investigate:
Prosumer:
Sony HDR-FX7, HDR-FX1000
“Pro” grade:
Canon XHA1
Sony HVR-Z5
Panasonic AG-HVX200
JVC GY-HM100
Canon XLH series
Sony HDCAM series
Sony XDCAM Series
Canon EXF
RED (One or Scarlet) or Silicon Graphics (both are “ultra-high definition”)
You can also consider the dSLRs that can also capture high definition video. Their audio capture capabilities leaves a lot to be desired (just use external audio capture devices), but they do have advantages (including possible re-use of your existing lens collection).

Multi-camera shoots are always fun – and fun to edit to be sure the audio is seamless and the cuts flow well.
