are like? Im thinking of buying one. I’m just looking for something that is cheap that will work for school and random useage. If you have any other suggestions please share. And make sure to give a detailed review as well.

They are both fine entry-level camcorders. No mic jack. No manual audio control. Both use miniDV tape so transferring video from tape to computer requires your computer to have a firewire 400 port. Transfer using USB is not supported and won’t work. USB/firewire adapter/converters won’t work.
Lenses are the same size; imaging chips are about the same. Lowlight behavior for ALL camcorders in this entry level category won’t be too good. HC52 has “NightShot” mode (built-in infrared emitter for zero-light capabilities). Decent optical zoom (turn off digital zoom – it is useless in any camera). DV format video stored to the minDV tape is least compressed of the available storage media resulting in best available video quality (compared to similarly priced/featured hard drive, flash memory and DV based camcorders).
In either case, if you are planning to capture loud audio (bands – amplified or not, large noisy crowds, engines, etc…), neither of these camcorders will behave well – the loud audio will overdrive the auto-mic gain circuit and audio will be muddy and full of static. The resolution to this is to replace the camcorder audio with audio captured by a field recorder (M-Audio, Zoom, Edirol, and others) or get a camcorder with manual audio control (least expensive are the Canon HV30 or Sony HDR-HC9). There are a couple of Sony and Canon low-end camcorders that have a “High audio” switch or menu selection that you can select in loud noise environments to lower the mic gain and reduce the loud audio saturation… But not all of them have it, so you need to download and read the camcorder’s manual to verify the feature availability on the camcorder.
Camcorderinfo.com has more detail (but I don’t think they include the mic gain “switch” information)… otherwise, a coin flip works.
