Mini Dvd Players Camcorders
Can someone tell me about camcorders? DVD, Mini DVD, Digital?
I’m planning on buying a camcorder for Christmas and have no idea what to buy. Can you tell me the pros and cons of the different types listed above? My budget will be somewhere around $400, give or take a little. If I buy one that records onto the mini dvds, are these playable in regualar dvd players? Also, if they have a slot for a memory card, does this mean I can record onto the mini dvd OR onto the memory card? Thanks to the ones who answer intelligently! I will award the best answer in a day or so.
Hi there….
The basic difference between the three standards you mentioned depends largely on how long you would like to be able to record and the video/sound quality of your recording.
First, for standard DVD camcorders, the pros are that recordable DVDs are available for sale at a lot of locations that aren’t necessarily electronics related. Most discount stores sell recordable DVDs as well as some of the national small scale retailers like Walgreens, CVS and the like. Availablilty of miniDVDs and digital8 tapes are not as widespread. These DVDs can be played in most players, however you will want to pay attention to the type of recordable DVDs that are used (DVD+R and DVD-R discs can only be recorded on one time, while DVD+RW and DVD-RW can be recorded to and erased many times). One con in regards to the standard DVD camcorders are that they are larger and bulkier then the minis or digital8 camcorders. Recording times depend on the camcorder, however for camcorders that have SLP record capability, you’re able to record 6 hrs worth (record time is inversely proportional to quality, so for HQ recordings of the highest quality, you will have less record time, about 60 minutes).
Mini DVDs can also be played in many standard DVD players and in most camcorders, record times range from 20 minutes in HQ (high quality) to 60 minutes in LP. Mini DVD players are much smaller, compact and lightweight, so if you’re wanting something that you can carry around for long periods of time and aren’t very concerned about recording length, you may want to look at this format for your purchase.
The third format, popularly called digital8, is actually a tape based system and stores 60-80 minutes of video/audio in SP mode and between 120-160 minutes in LP mode. This format is not compatible with any DVD players and usually comes with cables that would allow you to hook the camcorder up to a DVD recorder, VCR or TV.
Hope this helps! Good luck and enjoy your purchase!
