Medium Priced Camcorders

January 11th, 2010

In the $350 and under price range, what type of camcorder should I consider?

I would like to transfer the videos to a PC (Vista) and then burn it to DVD (I have a burner). It would be used both indoors and outdoors. I would prefer not to use any tape based medium (MiniDV). Would I get better quality with a flash based standard definition camcorder or one of those mini type camcorders?
Thank You for reading this.

Canon ZR series (but not the ZR950). I know these are miniDV tape based and you said you would prefer not, but DV continues to provide best available video quality due to least amount of video compression applied to the digital stream when saving.

Canon FS series. Flash memory uses the same very highly compressed MPEG2 stream used by hard disc drive camcorders. Because of know problems with HDD cams, the selection priority list is:

MiniDV tape

Flash memory

Hard disc drive

DVD based camcorders should be ignored. They are useless. Especially the standard definition ones and especially if you want to edit the video at all.
