kids using camcorders
Help! Can’t seem to decide which camcorder to buy…?

I’m on information overload. I’ve been researching camcorders for days and I’m still at a loss. Can’t decide if I should go MiniDV or DVD…then once I decide that – which one do I choose???
Here’s what I need:
Image Stabilization, Low Lite, Good Zoom, Decent Still Pic Quality, Memory Card, also would like different record modes ie: sport, beach, fireworks, portrait, ect.
I will use this for family use (nothing pro)…vacations, holidays, kids hockey games…ect.
Would like to keep my price around 300 – 350…need to buy within the next week as we’re heading to the beach!
Thanks for your answers….

Your camcorder will be a long-term investment. So think about the future use with it.

MiniDV is for the amateur Pro, that is, if you don’t mind waiting while transferring the video to a PC, from a tape, then making a DVD from that. However, you get the best picture quality, compared to a DVD-Camcorder. Even when you burn it to a DVD.

For less hassle, low stress and no B.S., a DVD-Camcorder may be what you need. They cost a few dollars more than MiniDV.

The problem with a DVD-Camcorder is formatting, erasing, booting up for each time you turn the thing on and you get only 20 minutes per DVD video disk. A MiniDV will turn on in an instant and is ready to use. You get 60 minutes or 90 minutes (LP). All camcorders have the fancy features that you want.

Anything that is worth using in LOW LIGHT will cost more than your budget. Test those camcorders in a store. Test them in low lighting. You have to do that!!! Put the camcorder in your jacket or a box or something and see what it does.

Check out the JVC DVD-camcorders. They are pretty good for the price. SONY is just a tad bit more expensive, but you can record onto the miniDVD in “Edit-Mode”, and then edit the video files on a PC (to make a DVD), or you can use the traditional DVD-mode and make a normal video without the capability to edit the video later.

With all of that said. I personally choose MiniDV, because the quality is better than DVD-Camcorders. I don’t mind editing every tape that I make. I also like to use the MiniDV camcorder at a moment’s notice, without waiting for a DVD disk to format, or “boot up”, missing that golden moment of Aunt Mary falling down the lawn.
