Drop #4. Poorest lowlight due to smallest lens and imaging chip.
Drop #6. DVD camcorders should fall off the face of the Earth. The manufacturers should immediately stop production and refund $ to anyone who bought one.
I am not a big JVC camcorder fan. Color reproduction issues, plus the HDD camcorders use an odd .mod file format (modified MPEG2) that is not too common… so those drop, too… The GR-D850 does do analog AV-in, though – that *could* be useful…
If you can afford memory cards and don’t mind taking extra steps for making back-ups of the video on another hard drive, then the Canon FS100.
I prefer the Canon ZR930 over the ZR950. The ZR930 has a mic-in jack the 950 does not have. Both of these have better optical zoom than the Sony cams – but the Sony has “SuperNightShot” infrared zero light recording (the Canons do not). This mic-in jack is a big deal because the camcorder does not depend on where the built-in mics need to be to get good audio. None of these camcorders has manual audio control – the Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7 and HC9 are apparently outside your budget (they have mic-in and manual audio).
Do not pay attention to digital zoom – it should be disabled on whichever camcorder you get.
