Mini Dv Question?

Many people I know and many people on youtube still prefer the handy Mini DV camcorder. I owned one for quite the while, and so it sucks (really bad video quality). It could be the fact that the camcorder is old.

Also my dad, who owns a cluttered old Mini DV camera, pointed something out. The camera’s “head” eventually started to screw up (if he recorded on an already written tape, videos would overlap in a huge video mess).

If I were to buy this JVC GR-D850U (http://www.laptopmag.com/review/camcorders/jvc-gr-d850.aspx),
would I eventually have this “head wear” problem?

That’s the one thing that struck me about Mini DV camvorders – what about the head? Wouldn’t it eventually deteriorate? But then again almost all cameras deteriorate over time.

Besides from that, give me your opinion on this camcorder. Is it a good camera for just shooting simple videos for youtube?

Thanks for reading and answering!

There are a couple of thing that can be done to limit the problems of head clogging on minidv camcorders.

1. Buy one brand and model of tape and use no other, i like sony premium
(no problem with mixed coating types)

2. use the tapes to record once
(tapes are dead cheap now, and you can build up an archive of your old footage)

3. Use a dry cleaning tape whenever the camcorder indicates head cleaning. Use such tapes sparingly following the instructions to the letter, they are abrasive and over-use WILL wear out the tape heads.

MiniDV is best. No debate.
