Jvc Camcorders On Ebay
What is the best way to put 8mm and mini dv home videos on dvds?
I have about 60 tapes. I no longer have the 8mm camcorder. I do have the mini dv camcorder and a firewire cable which worked with my older Dell, but is not recognized by my new Toshiba. There is no software or any drivers available for this camera. It is an older cheap jvc. My first option is to have them transferred by a local company. They will do it for $15 per tape, but they cannot be edited. My second idea was to purchase an two camcorders on ebay (with software) and edit them using movie maker. The third option is to get the 8mm tapes transferred to playable dvds, use the mini dv cam with my tv and edit them using a dvd recorder. I just wasn’t sure if you can play one dvd while recording on a recorder using the same tv. I am afraid that if I buy the camcorders they may not work with this new computer. Any help would be appreciated. I am a mom of five and not super technical, so very if the computer editing is very difficult, please let me know!
I’m assuming that “8mm” means Digital8 – please correct me if I’m wrong. Both Digital8 and MiniDV transfer the video via firewire. Firewire cards cost about the same as transferring one of your tapes, so that’s your cheapest and best option. The drivers are for the card, not the camcorder, and they’re part of the operating system. You’ll need a Digital8 camcorder to play the Digital8 tapes, but you should then be able to capture the video from the tapes using the appropriate camcorder.
Video editing isn’t difficult but it’s not trivial. Windows Movie Maker is a good choice to start with but it’s quite limited – have a play with it and get some idea of the basics. Once you’re confident you know what you’d like to do you can look for something better. The great thing is you can make as many mistakes as you like – the original footage is still there, safe on the tape!
