How Camcorders Works

Can someone explain the differences between DVD camcorders and mini-DVD camcorders?
I need some help! We want something that is easy to use but preferably one where we can edit footage. How does the mini-DVD’s work? Do they have a cable that hooks into the TV/computer? If so does all TV’s have the necessary place to hook it into? Sorry but this is totally new to us and we want to make an educated decision on what we buy. And just in case it matters it will be mostly to take videos of birthday parties, family reunions, etc.
If you want to edit the video, stay away from DVD based camcorders… but to answer your questions directly:
How does the mini-DVD’s work?
RESPONSE: Image comes in the camcorder lens, hits the imaging chip and digitized – this is the same for all camcorders – in the consumer standard definition DVD world, the are electronics in the camcorder that “compress” the digital video to fit in a regular DVD player readable format (VOB). Of the currently available consumer camcorder storage media, this is the most compressed. Video compression = discarded video data = reduced video quality. In order to edit, you would “rip” the video from the DVD using a ripper like HandBrake. In the high definition consumer DVD camcorders, the very highly compressed and MTS files are stored in a relatively new format, “AVCHD”. Your video editor needs to be able to deal with AVCHD files. Flash memory and miniDV tape based cacorder media are much easier to deal with – for editing – and they do not have the baggage hard disc drive camcorders carry with them.
Do they have a cable that hooks into the TV/computer?
RESPONSE: All camcorders come with an “AV” cable that allows the user to connect an analog (composite) RCA video jack to a TV equipped with RCA AV inputs. These are the same jacks you would use to connect a DVD player, VCR or game console to a TV. In the high definition camcorder environment, the camcorders include a component or HDMI cable to connect to a HDTV.
If so does all TV’s have the necessary place to hook it into?
RESPONSE: Older TVs typically do not have multiple AV inputs. Most TVs made in the last 5-10 years or so have multiple AV inputs. Worst case: there are multi-input adapters that can be used with older TVs with only a single AV-in or RF-in (for antenna connection).
