What camcorder would you recommend that produces video with a “normal” file type?
I’m looking for a small consumer camcorder, preferably HD, that produces a video file that can be easily played on a Windows XP PC. It seems that many camcorders produce some sort of weird proprietary video file that needs to be converted before it will play, unless you are using the software that came with the camcorder. Or, you need to download some sort of special codec. Can you recommend a camcorder that produces a .wmv or .avi (or other commonly used) file?
The media can be flash, removable memory, hard drive, or hybrid. I do not want tape.

I see a lot of questions about that. You say that you don’t want tape but MiniDV cameras are probably the most compatible. I still use them and have never had a problem with any software.
