Do you think that Nestor Almendros could have understood the technical language of the camcorders of today?
Sometimes I read the forums of cinematography and videography on the net and I wonder if Nestor Almendros, or any other great cinematographer like him, could have been able to understand what the new generation is talking about and how he could have reacted after the new HD trend. What do you think?
The physics of light haven’t changed, and certainly whilst electronic cameras are very different from those used by the legends, the film cameras haven’t changed so much.
The classic attributes of composition, perspective, depth of field are all the same whether you shoot on 70mm film, or 1/3inch ccds.
It’s often said that digital photography and video cameras are somehow cheating. People will always want to use the best equipment available at the time, but whether you shoot on miniDV, HDCAM or ektachrome, it’s all worthless without the skill, consideration, technique aptitude and vision of a classic cinematographer.
People forget but the camera is actually the least important element of a production: the best camera in the world is worthless without knowledge of how to best apply the camera to your shoot.
If you have a poor script, poor talent, no lights, inadequate sound etc, all of these thngs cannot be compensated for by the latest camera.
