Why do Panasonic’s high end HD camcorders have such small zooms?
I’m looking at such models as the HDC-SDT750, which seems to be a pretty high end model. However, it only has 12x zoom, compared to 30x on the cheaper HDR-CX160. I realize that the former has a 3D attachment lens which drives up the price, but other high end models also seem to have low zooms (10-12x). Could someone explain this to me? Also, does anyone have a recommendation for an HD camcorder between $400-$800?
the cost of a 12x broadcast grade lens for a large format CCD is substantial and represents a good compromise of cost vs performance. most consumers can’t hold a zoom over 6x steady anyway. A 30x zoom for television work would cost $40,000 when you factor in the cost of the camera support system (aka tripod) which is more than most consumers will pay for an entire camera. look at the cost of 3x zooms for SLR cameras. the reason the high ratio zooms are so cheap on consumer cameras is they use tiny sized CCDs. many consumers just assume that if their camera records 1080 line resolution, the lens provided with the camera can actually focus that sharply.big glass is heavy and expensive and broadcasters put their cameras on a resolution chart that proves the lens can focus sharp or not.
