Hard Drive Camcorders Firewire

Got a Sony DCR 72SR with hard drive. Is it possible to transfer video to my iMac. USB cable does't do it.?
Am I right in thinking That camcorders with FireWire only Suitable are for an iMac?
I do not know if it's a general problem with USB camcorders, But There's a Problem with Macs and the DCR-SR72. In theory, you're just connecting to the USB device and see it as Mac Should a removable disk. In theory!
