Are Sony camcorders compatible with macs/final cut? If not what brands are?
I’m looking to buy a camcorder and I really like the sony ones.. I don’t remember the name but it’s like 1200 dollars and it’s HD and it’s like black. Anyway I need to know if they are compatible with a mac computer and final cut, because that’s what I’ll be using them on.
Also, if you know could you possibly list the brands that are compatible with mac and Final Cut Express and Final cut pro?

The manufacturers and “brands” don’t matter. The video format they capture are what matter.
MiniDV tape based camcorders that record DV and HDV need to connect to your Mac with a firewire cable – that is not in the box with the camcorder. If your Mac is a new MacBook or a MacBook Air, there is no firewire port and no way to add one. ALL other Macs made in the last 10+ years have a firewire port. You will need to be a firewire cable separately. This would be the HDR-HC series camcorders.
Consumer hard disc drive and flash memory camcorders connect with USB. When they record high definition, they save to AVCHD compressed MTS files. Only the most current FinalCut (Express or Pro) or iMovie ’08 or newer – running on an Intel-chip Mac will be able to deal with AVCHD files. Copy the video files using USB. Flash drive camcorders are the HDR-CX series and the hard disc drive camcorders are the HDR-SR and HDR-XR series camcorders.
All the Sony high def camcorders have a mic jack. The HDR-HC9 is the only one with a mic jack AND manual audio control.
When the camcorder’s hard drive fills, what are you planning to do? Transfer to a computer? What if there is no computer available to transfer that video?
When the hard drive camcorder breaks, how are you expecting to get the video off that internal hard drive?
If the hard drive camcorder is stolen before you have a chance to transfer the video, what are you planning to do?
With miniDV tape or flash memory, have spare tapes or memory cards available. When the one in the camcorder fills, take it out and use a blank. Always carry spares.
When the miniDV tape or flash memory camcorder breaks, take the tape or memory card out and use another equivalent camcorder.
Where are you planning to store archived video (whether you actually use it in a project or not)? Keep in mind the miniDV tape is a great, inexpensive way to archive video. A single regular (~$3) 60 minute miniDV tape can hold up to 14 gig of standard definition DV video or 44 gig of high definition HDV video (this is the amount of computer hard drive space used when that amount of video is imported).
