Which camcorder is better, a DVD or a Hard-disk drive camcorder?

I know a bit about video editing (using the Adobe Premiere Pro Software), but most of the editing I’ve done is for medical/surgical videos. I want to buy a camcorder for home videos, so I can edit them at home with the editing knowledge I now have, and I really need some good input on which camcorder is best for me.

Although I know that probably miniDV or DV are the best for editing, they’ve been out there for a while, and I guess they will eventually be discontinued (just as the Beta, VHS, Hi8 and super 8 camcorders), so I want a “newer” format that will last several years. I have some experience with DVD camcorders, but the HDD ones are more appealing for the length of recording time and the fact that you don’t need additional recording media.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

If you want best quality video you’ve got to stick with MiniDV. The DVD and harddrive cameras still need to compress the video as it is stored to the HD/DVD which will lead to a loss in vidoe quality. I know Hard drive is popular right now, and before that DVD was really popular, but stick with the technology that will give you the best picture quality.

It seems like your mind is made up, but I don’t think they’ll discontinue MiniDV any time soon. THere are cameras that sell for thousands of dollars and are were just produced that still call for MiniDV tapes.

If you’re terrified about the Future and want to stay on the cutting edge, get a Panasonic P2 card. They hold 8gigs, and they cheapest camera they go into starts at $5,000.
