Will Canon accessories work with my Sony Handycam?
I want to buy a Canon brand shotgun mic, but I’m not sure if it will work with my Sony DVD Handycam.
Alternatively, can someone recommend a good microphone for me?

You did not tell us which Sony DVD handycam. The model number is on the sticker on the bottom of the camcorder near the tripod mounting screw hole.
As far as I know NONE of them have a mic jack, and only a few of them have the Sony proprietary “Active Interface Shoe”.
The Canon mic you linked us to can work only in the Canon Advanced Accessory Shoe. The Sony AIS is smaller and there is no “converter” to connect the pins.
Your best bet is to go to Sony.com, get to your comcorder’s “product page” and see which Sony AIS mics are comptible with your Sony camcorder… or check the manual – typically, the back of the manual has a list of available and compatible accesories for your camcorder.
