Cheap SLR cameras? Olympus pen?

I recently broke my digital camera, it was a 1 year old panasonic lumix 10 mega pixels, and has served me well. But now it doesn’t work any more and I’m in desperate need of a good camera to do my photography coursework at school. My dad said he’d help me pay a new camera but says that I should get an SLR as they’re much better, and I do know that they are. At the moment I’ve been able to find an Olympus E-PL1 for around £250 on ebay (new) and £299 at Tesco.
Is this a good camera, the reviews give it 9/10. Is there anywhere I could get it cheaper?? I get £30 a week from my sunday job and I really need a camera.
Thanks

That is not a dSLR. Here are your choices. You do the math.
