What is the best and affordable Digital SLR Camera for a beginner?
I am a beginner in photography and I want to buy a DSLR camera. From my research there are several entry level dSLR that are good. Nikon D40 & D40x, Canon Rebel XTi 400D, or Pentax K100D. Which ones of these models are the best and affordable. Also where is the cheapest place to get them (and trustworthy)? Someone told me Cameras are cheaper in Singapore..is this true? if it is, how much cheaper and is the warranty valid in Australia?

I’ve looked around for D50 and D70 but it doesnt seem like anyone is selling it anymore. Where in Australia is the cheapest i can get a nikon D40? And should i buy a lens for it or just start with the basic 18-55mm lens?
After researching a bit more, I found that there aren’t many lenses for the Nikon D40..and a friend of mine said that makes it a bad option. He said that the Canon 400D would be good for a beginner.. Is this one a good camera?
Personally, I would recommend the Nikon D40 as a beginner camera.
The Nikon D40x, I do not pay attention to. They say it is the replacement for the Nikon D80 as a prosumer camera. This is laughable. Different sensors, smaller body, poor flash sync speed, no, this is not a replacement. The only selling point when I think of the D40x is the bright LCD. And really, this does not really matter. I can get by with the LCD on the Nikon D50.
The Canon Digital Rebel XTi takes good images, but for me, this is the only good point going for it. It is a really cheaply made camera, as was the Digital Rebel XT. This is what kept me with Nikon. But, this seems to be a problem the cheaper Canons suffer from, not the EOS 5D or the 1Ds Mark III.
The Pentax K100d is a good camera as well. It feels solid and the kit lens is better than most. But, it suffers from a major flaw: the use of 4 AA batteries, instead of a rechargable kind. Because of this, the average battery life is a few hours, if that. So, stock up on plenty of batteries before you go shooting. Also, something that I’ve heard is that there are some problems with the battery display meter. Because it is the cheapest DSLR on the market, quality control is something it lacks. On a side note, Pentax lenses are hard to find. The older lenses are great, and cheap, though.
One other thing that I might add is, have you ever considered buying a good used camera body? Cameras such as the Nikon D70s, D100, or D50? The D70s would be my choice. It’s a prosumer body, and it AF with all older Nikon lenses made since 1977, unlike the D40/D40x. The D70s, like all Nikon’s, is very solidly built.
With whatever buy, dont forget a good lens. The camera you’re using means nothing unless you have a good lens. The cheapest, and one of the best lenses on the market, is the 50mm 1.8. Nikon and Canon both have them, but I’m not sure about Pentax.
Going back to the cameras, I recommend the D40, but more so the D70s. Even over three years old, it is still a very great camera.
