I was wondering where could I get good Digital SLR cameras in Melbourne.
My price range is up to $600. I just want a SLR I can get started photography on.

Well, I don’t know why, but the price for the EOS 450D has just gone up on this particular website I’m about to recommend:

I doubt that matters, though. I’ll recommend the Sony a200 to start with, as the twin kit is really cheap! And from there you can expand your lens collection, or stay as is. It’s not new, but it’s still good. Otherwise, the Pentax K-1000/KM, or Pentax K200D.
There’s a store in Northcote for Digital Camera Warehouse, although you can get it sent to your home.
I used that once; there’s also CamerasDirect.com.au, which tends to be cheaper for (D)SLRs and kits, although for lenses search on
shopbot.com.au
and find a respectable one (not imported stock, unless it offers Aus. warranty as well, and only if it’s much cheaper; say, $200 less) and get it off there. There’s delivery, but they are normally under $30, and the price you’ll save is more than that.
Otherwise, if can’t be bothered, go to Ted’s. Don’t go to Michaels; while they are respectable and have knowledgeable staff… they are expensive.
