What is the difference between optical and digital zoom?
I want to get a camera for christmas. A professional SLR camera. I don’t know much about cameras. But I am very interested and commited to start photography as a new hobby of mine. I am more interested in good quality of the focus and decent HD quality. I just want to know what are some good brands that are best for me? And I can’t spend anything over 350 either. What are some things I should really focus on feature-wise when shopping for a camera?
SLR (film) & D/SLR (digital) cameras use interchangeable lenses. They only use an optical zoom. P&S and bridge cameras use optical and digital zoom. In those types you want the largest Optical zoom, and ignore the digital zoom (they only make the photos worse).
For your budget of $350, that will limit you to a high-end P&S or a middle of the road “Bridge” camera…maybe a film SLR or a decent USED DSLR camera.
A new professional SLR film camera will start around $1900 and a pro DSLR will start around $3500, and that is just for the body and no lenses.
The best thing to do is go to your local camera store (not electronics store), and see what they have that will fit in your budget.
