Optical zoom changes the focal length of the lens and so the image is captured on the full sensor regardless of the zoom.
In digital zoom, the image is ‘cropped’ or cut down to imitate higher focal length. The cropped image is a small part of the sensor and the cropping depends on the digital zoom used. This translates to lower resolution image.
Optical zoom is always better.
