PLEASE HELP! How to import video from a sony video camera?

I don’t know exactly what it’s called, because it’s just my sister’s old one that she gave me and on it it says:

The Sony DSC-P73 is not a “video camera” exactly. It is a DSC (Digital Still Camera) that happens to capture very highly compressed video as a “convenience feature”. I make this distinction because you need to understand that most point and shoot cameras designed to take still images do a fine job at that but a relatively poor job with video.

Anyway, since you provided no information on what computer you are using or what operating system or what you want to do with the video, the information below will be fairly general.

See page 9 for the location of the mini-USB port and memory stick slot (and page 21). There’s more computer connection detail on page 84. You can either connect the camera to your computer with a USB cable or you can take the Memory Stick out and use a card reader. Either way, the video files captued by that camera are MPG files. Video editors can’t deal with this file type directly.

You will need to transcode them if you want to edit. HandBrake and Squared5′s MPEG StreamClip

are good transcoders – there are many others out there.

Copy the MPG files from the memory card to the computer, Launch one of the transcoders and convert to a format your computer’s video editor can deal with – Windows MovieMaker likes WMV files; Apple iMovie like MOV files – among others. After transcoding, quit that application and launch the video editor. Drag the transcoded file to the video editor’s capture area.

If you only want to view the video, a player like VLC player
