Why is Ken Rockwell not practicing what he preaches?

When speaking of whether to invest the majority of your money in your camera body or in the lens, Ken Rockwell is quoted, “…always put your money into your lenses. This is because lenses have far more to do with picture quality and ease of use…” http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/lens-or-camera.htm

Later, I found this in another article. “On a more reasonable budget I’d suggest the 18 – 55, which you can get with a camera as a kit. It’s inexpensive, about $140, and works as well or better than the more expensive 18 – 70 ($330) and 17 – 55 ($1,500) lenses. There’s no reason you can’t make tens of thousands of fantastic images with just the 18 – 55.” http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikkor.htm#digital

I’ve always took Ken Rockwell as a valuable resource for my photography but this has made me hesitant.

What do you guys think? Am I reading this wrong or something?
Perhaps the first article is focusing on the resale value of lenses.

Ken Rockwell is nothing special: Just a photography with a lot of time and money on his hands. I’ve noticed his comments too, saying get the 18-55mm kit lens over the 17-55mm f2.8 Nikkor. Sharpness wise, they are identical, but you can understand why a professional would pass it for the 17-55mm. And in his “review” of the new Nikon D700, he was really hounding it, saying it was an amateur camera. Definitely not true.

In short, I take his reviews seriously, but not his advice.
