What software program would be best to create a user/budget-friendly magazine from home?
I am beginning to create a magazine for Dallas. My home desktop PC will be my office, and I am looking for a user-friendly, budget-friendly desktop publishing software program to create about a 150-175 page magazine. I want it to be easy to place text and images whereever I want, easily and quickly. The most important function is to be able to import pictures taken with my digital camera(s) and place the picture anywhere on the page. I want it to have at least a small variety of fonts. Also, I will not be publishing at home; just producing. I want to be able to save the publication format to disk and take it elsewhere for publishing. Any ideas of a good program that meets these qualifications and gives me the best bang for a decent buck?
The printing part might be a problem if you don’t have one of the “industry standard” apps, which are QuarkXpress and Adobe Indesign.
If you can find a printer that actually uses Publisher (and not as “and oh yeah, we can handle Publisher files too”) then you can go with it.
You can also try the free open source scribus – http://www.scribus.net/ The problem with that would also be that not a lot of print studios will support it.
Whatever app you get, ask your studio to help you calibrate your colour settings for their printers. They’ll help you out if you’re gonna be a regular customer.
