What’s the difference between flushed lens cameras & the normal style camera?

Hi,
Why do some cameras like the Samsung ST1000 (http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/compact-digital-cameras/samsung-st1000-review-49304417/) have the lens flush in the corner while most digital cameras have the lens that pop out (http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/compact-digital-cameras/panasonic-lumix-dmc-tz8-review-49305809/) I am looking at basic digital cameras and I would like to know if there is an advantage or difference.

Thank you for your help.

in those types of cameras, there is no real difference in quality or much advantage either. They are just employing different technology to achieve the same thing.

if you want to be very very particular about it (although 99% of the population, even the photographer population wouldn’t be able to tell the difference)
- lens that pop out are traditional. A more time has been use to develop and perfect that technology
- flush cameras use more glass and refraction and reflection to condense lens construction. And a smaller, more convenient package to carry around.
- flush camreas have less moving parts and will be less prone to breakage by jammed zoom motor.
- typically traditional lenses carry larger sensors (which is always a great bonus for quality pictures)
