Digital camera suggestions please?

I’m looking for a digital camera in the range of $200-300, it will mainly be used for simple point and shoot photos. I find that my old camera had bad shots when not using the flash, and hated low light conditions and was rather slow. So i realised technology has improved since my camera so I was looking for some suggestions. I am willing to go a bit over the budget if there is a particularly good camera that’s a bit more. I would prefer not to buy it online and in Australia.

I can recommend a Canon as a brand. I’m not sure how they are priced in Australia, though.
