Digital Cameras Like Slr

What are some really good SLR Digital Cameras?
I need one for a class I am taking. Preferably a 10 or 11 mega-pixel. I don’t want to break the bank either (as in, I would really like to pay around $400-$600 dollars)
Also, it would be nice if you can tell me where to get one at a decent price. (preferably not ebay)
Canon Digital Rebel T1i or XSi kit. They come with a lens for about $800. The 40D kit will run you over $1000.
Check out www.photography-on-the.net forums. They have a buy/sell section. You can sometimes get good deals on used equipment from hobby/pro/semipro photographers.
