Digital Cameras Histogram
Checking exposure on older film vs. digital cameras…?
Ok….this has been bugging me for a while…and I’m sure there’s a simple explanation that someone can give me..
When I take a picture (working manually) with my digital SLR camera….to make sure I have definitely got the exposure to how I want it, I will check my histogram and also make sure the highlight warning isn’t flashing in too many parts on my display. (Is this how others do it too?)
But how did they used to do it on the old film cameras that didn’t have these features?

Sorry yes, should have added I do use the light meter in camera….but to absolutely make sure I always check the results after the shot has been taken.

External light meter, bracketing, experience, exposure guides, exposing for the shadows with negative film, sunny 16 rule, in camera spot meter and knowing how to compensate for various subject tones, good dark room techs, and yes, some shots that just end up in the trash! lol
All the skills of a good film photographer are not wasted with digital. Unless I am shooting something really “weird” exposure wise, I rarely need to look at the monitor or histogram on my dSLR. I still use my hand held ambient light meter or use exposure compensation with the in camera SPOT meter. The digital RAW format is the modern equivalent of the film dark room and allows me to correct any small exposure errors.
Frankly, I really hate seeing people “chimping” after every shot. You can miss so much that way. While you are looking at your monitor and histogram, I am getting the great shot you just missed.
