Using a white screen/wall & programs other than Photoshop for digital photo backgrounds.?
I’m trying to get into digital portrait taking, for family first, then perhaps later as a business if I get really good at it. I’ve found great deals on digital backgrounds & already have a decent camera. The problem is that I can’t afford the blue/green screens, the lighting sets, OR Photoshop. Can I use white screen and Gimp for now, until I can afford better? Are the digital backgrounds out there(free or not)able to be used if the picture’s taken against a white or light background? And are there any digital background sets that can be used with programs OTHER than Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro?

Of course you can use GIMP and a white screen. What you need to do is make a layer mask from the subject, and use that to mask out the white background, then you can use any background you want.
There is no such thing as a “digital background”, the fact is any digital image can be used as a background. If you want to find free ones that would be suitable to use as a background, you could do a creative commons search in Flickr. Remember to check the details of the licence to make sure you are using the images legally.
As far as I know, only GIMP and Photoshop support proper layer masks, and the ability to use vector paths to create a layer mask.
Actually, using green/blue screens can be quite tricky – you really need to get the lighting right or you will mess it up.
